Nieuwlande 1940-1945

A village that maintained silence

Nieuwlande, a village in Drenthe, offered shelter to hundreds of people in hiding during World War II. These included members of the resistance, Nazi deserters, people who didn’t want to be sent to Germany for forced labor, but most were Jews fleeing the Holocaust.
The Westerbork transit camp and Nieuwlande, just 30 km apart, represent two extremes of wartime history. The De Duikelaar Hiding Place Museum tells the many stories of those who hid and their host families.
For this assistance to the Jews, the entire village of Nieuwlande and the surrounding area received an award from Yad Vashem in Israel. Only one other place in the world has received the same honor.
Experience what it was like to go into hiding. Learn about the risks people took to save strangers. Find out what resistance hero Johannes Post had to do with it.
Outside the museum, you can also visit a preserved hiding place in the woods from that time.
